DEFEND,
MAINTAIN AND BUILD THE SOCIALIST ALLIANCE
I"The Socialist
Alliance has been a major step forward for the unity of the
socialist movement around a common programme, People Before
Profit. At its height the Alliance was able to bring together
independent socialists, ex-members of the Labour Party, the Socialist Party, SWP,
International Socialist Group, AWL, Workers Power, CPGB, RDG,
Workers International, and International Socialist League.
The motion from the SA Task Group to Saturday's
conference will, if passed, end the rights of local Alliances
to take democratic decisions about standing candidates, as
Socialist Alliance candidates, in local council or parliamentary
elections. Such candidates would be subject to approval of
another organisation (Respect) and only permitted to stand
in the name of Respect regardless of the democratic decisions
of SA members.
The current situation is therefore one of real
danger for the SA and the project of uniting socialists in
one organisation. We call on all members, regardless of any
political differences we may have had in the past, to work
closely together to defend, maintain and build the SA".
